Dental Implants Vs. Dental Bridges – how to choose

At Victoria Village Dentistry in Riverside, our talented dental experts provide the best quality teeth bridges and dental implants. Are you or someone you care about having trouble deciding between dental implants and bridges to replace any and all missing teeth? No matter what you previously thought about both processes or the cost of either, let us explain the difference between them and help you decide which option is right for you.

Dental Implants Defined

An implant is a structure that is specifically built to be surgically inserted directly into the jaw bone. Dental implants function as the root portion of an artificial tooth, and provides retention and stability to any prosthesis placed over it, such as crown, bridges, and dentures.

A single implant can be used to restore one missing tooth, while there are other options for full mouth implant rehabilitation of edentulous jaws if necessary. We take great care in the construction of every procedure and operation, and promise only the finest treatment of our patients.

How Exactly Do Dental Implants Work?

Dental implants are typically fabricated from Titanium and similar alloys. These materials possess unique capabilities, including the promotion of bone formation around the surface of the implant. The implant gradually becomes embedded within the jaw bone. This process is known as Osseo-integration, and it is the primary cause of durability and excellent retention of dental implants – both supported fixed and removable dentures.

How are Dental Implants Placed?

Placement of dental implants is carried out in two or three steps. We also offer same day dental implants for selected clinical cases. First, there will be an examination of your teeth. Next, the soft tissue overlying the bone where the implant will be inserted will be anesthetized. Then, a small incision will be made, and a flap will be raised. A hole will be drilled into the jaw bone, and the implant will be carefully inserted into position.

How is the Implant Loaded?

If you have chosen a delayed implant loading, then a healing screw is placed over the implant and the flap is sutured. Alternatively, if you have decided on a same day implant, a suitable prosthesis (such as permanent dentures, crown or a bridge) is attached to the implant immediately after its placement.

In case of delayed implant loading, placement of any form of prosthesis is delayed until you have had sufficient time to fully heal.

What are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

In recent years, dental implants have become one of the main tooth replacement options suggested by dental experts. Here are some of the benefits you can enjoy if you choose to replace your missing teeth with dental implants:

  • Overall Safety – Dental implants are typically prepared by using Titanium alloys, a naturally strong and reliable metal. Titanium implants will not cause any allergic or toxic reaction to the body.
  • They’re Easy to Maintain – There is no special oral hygiene needed for dental implants. All you need to do is regularly brush the implant supported teeth.
  • Dental Ease – Implant supported replacements can let you speak and eat without any additional inconvenience.
  • Overall Convenience – If you want implant supported prostheses, then you’ll be able to eat and speak again without any additional difficulties. In no time, your brand new implants will feel just like your natural ones. A talented expert in dentistry can replace any missing tooth with one of these replacements.
  • Strength – The Titanium alloys used in construction possess excellent durability, which extend the life of prostheses placed over them. Dental implants can even last for a lifetime, provided they are thoroughly cared for and you maintain good oral hygiene.

Are There Any Problems With Permanent Implants?

  • Success is Dependent upon Surgical Technique – To be frank, the overall success or failure of a dental implant procedure is dependent on the technique and skill of your resident dentistry expert. Just a single small mistake during the surgery can cause a condition called peri-implantitis, which can lead to immediate complications. You need to find a dentist you trust, which is why we only work with some of the finest dentists in the Riverside area.
  • High Cost – The cost of getting dental implants is higher when compared to removable dentures and bridges. If you decide that dental implants are the route you wish to take, we are willing to work with you to complete the procedure.

What Are Dental Bridges?

Bridges are a kind of fixed dental prostheses, used to replace multiple missing teeth. Unlike conventional removable dentures, bridges are supported by natural teeth or dental implants on either side of the missing teeth gap.

How are Dental Bridges Made?

We promise the best quality service to all of our patients, and to ensure that, we take extra care during the construction and application of dental bridges:

  • When Our Dentist Examines You – Our chief dentist – Jyoti Desar DDS – or one of the other members of our staff of dentistry experts will perform a thorough examination of your teeth. Then, your radiographs and dental records will be evaluated to ensure that you are a good candidate for the operation.
  • When your Teeth are Prepared – Next, we’ll prepare the teeth by slightly removing light tooth structure, to create room for the attachment of the bridge over them.
  • When the Impression is Made – An impression of the prepared teeth is made, which is then sent to the dental laboratory for fabrication of the bridge.
  • When the Bridge is Attached – The fully prepared bridge will be placed and checked to ensure the fit and look. If the bridge is a good fit, then the bridge will be permanently cemented to the prepared teeth with the help of a dental cement.

Pros of Teeth Bridges

We recommend teeth bridges four all of our patients who suffer from these problems.

  • Strength – Bridges are longer lasting and more durable when compared to removable dentures. This is due to the high quality of the materials used for the fabrication of teeth bridges over dentures.
  • Aesthetics – Teeth replaced with bridges are more aesthetically pleasing than false teeth used in removable dentures.
  • Repair – Unlike typical removable dentures, teeth bridges will remain fixed to your teeth. Using them, you can enjoy all your favorite foods – and won’t have to worry about the condition of the bridge.
  • Normal Occlusion – When you lose a tooth and it isn’t replaced, the adjacent teeth have the capability to expand into all vacant space. If you replace any missing teeth with a sufficient dental bridge, balanced occlusion is restored inside the mouth and adjacent teeth are prevented from expanding any further.

Cons of Teeth Bridges

  • Temporary Life – Unfortunately, even if you maintain good oral hygiene, bridges will usually last an average for five to seven years. Afterwards, new bridges will need to be prepared and installed.
  • Loss of Tooth Structure – During abutment preparation, natural teeth will need to be attached to the bridge framework. Because of this, a certain amount of healthy tooth structure has to be sacrificed.

With the Consumer MaxMultiplier, you are awarded for annual dental checkups by having an amount added to your maximum benefit the following year. Maximum benefits start at $1,000, $1,500 or $2,000. With the FlexAppeal Preventive MaxMultiplier, preventive and diagnostic services are covered completely and not applied to your deductible or maximum benefit. And with FlexAppeal Enhanced, you still have preventive care covered and have some additional basic and major service covered, including dental implants.
